Residential & Neighbor Noise
STOP HEARING YOUR NOISY NEIGHBORS!!!
Acoustical needs in residential applications vary from eliminating street and neighbor noise to shaping an acoustical environment in the home theater. There are many noise problems that can be addressed while designing your home or remedied in applications for existing residences. Noise levels for sources such as hallways, footfall, TV, stereos, elevators, heating pipes, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, and traffic can be reduced with a variety of noise control solutions. Noise transmission from room to room is also an area of noise control that deserves consideration when occupants want to reduce outside noise in specific rooms such as bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms, and home theaters.
City Soundproofing is dedicated to providing the information, design and materials needed to assure the required acoustical criteria are met for your application.
We recommend that we come to measure and evaluate your existing conditions for a $150 site visit fee. This will allow accurate measurements and make sure that this treatment can be properly installed before we move forward. Additional cost for insurance requirements may apply.
In many cases you will need permission from the building to install noise control materials.

Solutions for common neighbor noise problems
Doors
Our Perimeter Seals and an Automatic Door Bottom will do a lot to reduce noise coming through. "Where Air Goes Noise Goes!" We recommend the Perimeter Seals and the Automatic Door Bottom as a first step. Materials usually cost around $350 and installation is $350. (Estimate based on Manhattan delivery)
In most cases you will need permission from the building to install this treatment since it is installed on the hallway side of the door.Learn more about Door Treatments
Ceiling Applications
For ceiling applications, if possible, we would remove the existing ceiling to apply two layers of 5/8" drywall with Green Glue directly to the sub-floor above, before retrofitting with insulation. This step can make a big difference in "footfall" impact noise from above. Isolation clips with furring channel and one or two layers of 5/8" drywall. This takes up less than three inches of interior space.

Wall Applications
We would first see if you have insulation in the wall or ceiling cavities. We would then add a layer of mass loaded vinyl barrier, insulate with fiberglass insulation as needed, install 2 1/2" stud wall floor to ceiling, and one or two layers of 5/8" drywall. This takes up less than four inches of interior space.

Useful Products for Controlling Neighbor Noise
Automatic Door Bottoms automatically create a seal at the bottom of your door when closed to prevent noise from passing through the space at the bottom of the door.
Door Seals create a seal around the perimeter of your door when closed to prevent noise from passing through the space at jamb and door stop of the door.
Flexible Sound Barriers - mass loaded vinyl.
Resilient Sound Isolation Clips - Resilient Sound Isolation Clips, are used to reduce structure borne noise from impact or "footfall." They add thickness to the application and increase cost, but significantly decrease noise transmission./p>
Green Glue - works very well for the cost and may be installed by contractors. It reduces noise transmission through walls and ceilings by "damping" the vibrations caused by ambient and structure borne noise, somewhat like putting a rubber mat over a drum head. Acoustical Caulk should be added wherever there are "leaks," cracks and holes, where air can pass to reduce flanking noise.
Carpet Underlayment in 1- and 2-pound weights delivers exceptional noise reduction to rooms below for "footfall," impact noise, and ambient noise transmission. It comes in rolls and is a composite of Mass Loaded Vinyl and open cell foam to isolate the vinyl barrier from the floor.
